The Kurmi are a Hindu agricultural caste found primarily in Northern India. They have historically been involved in cultivating land and growing crops. There is some debate around their exact social classification within the traditional Hindu caste system. During British colonial rule in India, the Kurmi experienced both economic prosperity from their agricultural success but also attempts by larger landowners to impose on them an inferior social status.
